SWAMI PREMANANDA

Swami Premanandaji

Born on the 7th May 1920 at Balrampur District Gonda, U. P. (India) at about 4 AM. The parents Shri Shivprasad and Smt. Parvati had earlier lost several children in infancy. This child Mahabir Prasad ordained to Swami Premananda was taken to a Muslim Saint (Peer) for blessings. The Saint blessed the child saying "the child will survive but parents shall have to make sacrifice." So soon after, his mother passed away and after some time his father also expired. The infant was adopted by a relation Munshi Kanhaiyalal and his wife brought him up with affectionate care. He did well at school and college and thereafter joined State Revenue Service.

During all these years before and after office hours devotional songs, study of scriptures, meditate in seclusion and company of saints was his routine engagement. One of the Realised saints of that area Gudi Wale Baba once declared that this young man will become sanyasi one day. Further having been influenced by Great Saints of those days Swami Sharnanandaji Maharaj, Swami Ranganathanandaji Maharaj now head of Sri Ramakrishna Mission and Swami Palakhridhiji Maharaj finally he came to Sivananda Ashram Rishikesh in March-1956.

The Holy Master Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj the founder of the Divine Life Society whose spiritual writings had long been source of inspiration accepted him as disciple and initiated him to the sanyasa order,- Swami Premananda Saraswati: In a very short spell of time Swami Premananda become very popular among devotees from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan states, for his melodious recitation of Sri Ramcharitamanas and beautiful exposition of Bhakti Rasa of this great Epic. During his tours in India and abroad his main objective is Sri Guru Seva through dissemination of spiritual knowledge.

He is one among the most senior monks of Sivananda Ashram. Rishikesh whose presence in Narayan Kutir or in any spiritual congregation in the Ashram or outside is a big boon for devotees.
